SMASH! is a not-for-profit Japanese pop culture convention that began in Sydney in 2007 for around 1000 fans.
The weekend's event (July 13 and 14) shows just how much it has grown, with as many as 20,000 devotees drawn to the International Convention Centre to show their deep appreciation for art, both official and hand-made,
As these photos show, the crowd ranged from parents dressing up in costumes to match their kids, to professional cosplayers willing to spend up to 150 hours slaving away at custom-made props.
